Tunisia’s Esperance de Tunis have booked their place at the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2018 after mounting an impressive comeback to overturn a 3-1 first leg deficit to win the CAF Champions League – their third continental crown.

Trailing Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC 3-1 after the first leg in Cairo last week, the Tunisians – roared on by a passionate 60,000 crowd inside Stade Olympique de Rades in Tunis – stormed to a 3-0 victory on Friday night to secure a 4-3 aggregate score-line over the two legs.

Goals from Saad Bguir (2) and Anice Badri gave Esperance victory, earning the club its first CAF Champions League title since 2011 and avenging defeat in the 2012 final to Al Ahly. Their prize is a place in quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2018 at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain on 15 December, where they will face the winners of the tournament’s opening game - Al Ain FC vs Team Wellington FC.

Badri’s strike also earned him the CAF Champions League Golden Boot, finishing as the competition’s top scorer with eight goals.

“Congratulations to Esperance de Tunis and welcome to the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2018. They showed great determination and desire to win the CAF title and secure their place in the UAE. With that level of desire on the pitch and passionate fans I’m sure they will attract a lot of attention during the tournament in December and they will be a popular addition,” said His Excellency Aref Hamed Al Awani, Tournament Director, FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2018 Local Organizing Committee.

Esperance General Coach Moeen El-Shaabani expressed his delight toward his team’s great performance and sealing the third continental title besides qualifying to the FIFA Club World Cup in the UAE.

"Many experts have predicted that Esperance is not the best team in the African Champions League and will not be able to win, but the players have proved their worth and ability," said the Tunisian coach, who won the first trophy in his career. "We are now at the top of the African football and will compete in the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2018 aiming for putting the best performance”.

Esperance de Tunis are one of six champions from FIFA’s confederations who take the field in the UAE in December, along with the winners from UEFA (Europe); CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean); AFC (Asia); OFC (Oceania) and CONMEBOL (South America) and UAE host team Al Ain FC.

The 2018 world club champions will be crowned in the final at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City Stadium on 22 December.

Already confirmed for the tournament are Real Madrid CF (UEFA); CD Guadalajara (CONCACAF); Team Wellington FC (OFC) and hosts Al Ain FC.
