The FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2018 is now just 20 days away and a mere 90 minutes from knowing the full, world-class line-up for the tournament which runs from 12-22 December in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
With six of the world’s best teams already confirmed for the 14th edition of the FIFA Club World Cup - the pinnacle of world club football – tickets are selling fast, starting from AED 25, for the eight competitive matches to be played at the state-of-the-art Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, in Al Ain, and Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City Stadium, the largest stadium in the UAE with a capacity of 43,000.
Already confirmed are Arabian Gulf League champions and host team Al Ain FC; AFC champions Kashima Antlers from Japan; CONCACAF Champions League winners CD Guadalajara of Mexico; CAF conquerors Esperance de Tunis of Tunisia and defending champions Real Madrid, who will represent UEFA after winning a third straight Champions League crown.
The final remaining spot will be decided this weekend when Argentinian rivals Club Atlético River Plate and Boca Juniors take the field for the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final, in the battle to represent South America’s CONMEBOL confederation in the UAE.
The match, which will be played at 5pm on Saturday (12am on 25 November, UAE time) at River Plate’s Estadio Monumental, looks set to be a thriller. The tie is tensely poised with the score at 2-2 following the first leg at Boca’s Estadio Alberto J Armando.
Boca Juniors know they have it all to do after failing to win the first leg at home.
“We were ahead twice, and we couldn’t hold the result. We had the game in our hands, but we let it escape from us,” said Boca coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto.
Known as the Superclasico, the rivalry between Boca Juniors and River Plate is regarded as one of the fiercest in world football, stretching back more than 110 years. The first official match between the Buenos Aires city rivals was on 24 August 1913, with River Plate winning 2-1.
The pair have met 246 times in all competitions with Boca Juniors winning 88 times. River Plate have 81 victories with 77 draws. Boca Juniors have outscored their rivals 322 goals to 298. In the Copa Libertadores, the Superclasico has been played 25 times, with Boca winning eight times and River Plate sealing seven victories.
