Abu Dhabi Spots Council (ADSC) and Miral Asset Management are announcing a strategic partnership set to further boost Yas Island’s, and Abu Dhabi’s, growing sporting credentials. Signed in a ceremony between ADSC and Miral, the partnership formalises Yas Island’s role as destination partner for four world-class sporting events; the highly successful 2016 Abu Dhabi Tour, which took place this past October, as well as three upcoming events : the 2017 Abu Dhabi Tour, the 2017 ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi, and a yet-to-be announced fourth event set to take place in 2017.
The partnership will see Yas Island solidify its long-standing sporting credentials as it also paves the way for future events and facilities.
“As host to one of the largest sporting events in the region, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and with an ever growing list of professional and community sport events, unique venues and sporting facilities, Yas Island has enjoyed a long heritage of helping to boost Abu Dhabi’s growing sporting credentials,” said Mohamed Abdulla Al Zaabi, CEO of Miral. “Our partnerships with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council further propels Yas Island’s role in not only helping to foster Abu Dhabi’s burgeoning sporting culture, but also its profile amongst local and international audiences.”
“This ground-breaking deal represents a more structured and long-term approach to delivering on our vision of evolving Abu Dhabi and Yas Island into an international destination for sport, competitiveness and best-in-class events. Miral will bring to the table considerable marketing clout which will further build local, regional and global awareness of our expanding events portfolio,” explained His Excellency Aref Al Awani, General Secretary, Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
Starting in 2017, Yas Island will play host to an additional three upcoming events: the 2017 Abu Dhabi Tour, the ITU World Triathlon, and a yet-to-be announced third event.
Adding further significance to the partnership, the Abu Dhabi Tour’s 2017 edition, which will take place 23-26 February, 2017, will be included for the first time in the 2017 WorldTour calendar of the international cycling union, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). This upcoming third edition of the Abu Dhabi event will see Yas Island again host the fourth stage of the event following its successful – and second consecutive year - this past October. That stage saw cyclists take to the iconic Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island to race 26 laps of the 5.5km track. It also followed stage two, which saw the peloton ride alongside some of Yas Island’s most famous landmarks including Yas Waterworld, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and Yas Mall.
Also under the partnership, Yas Island will become the new home for triathlon in Abu Dhabi as it will host the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi. Announced in October and opening the 2017 World Triathlon Series, the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi will be held on Yas Island on 3 and 4 March 2017. Known as the pinnacle of world triathlon, the ITU World Triathlon, will see professionals, serious amateurs and first timers will descend on Yas Island to compete on the same course as World Champions and Olympic medallists – many of whom competed in Rio.
The partnership will also include yet another world-class sporting event, the details of which will be released in due course.
“Yas Island has always been a place where dreams can become reality thanks to our ever-expanding list of outstanding attractions and exhilarating events,” added Mr Al Zaabi. “Our partnership with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council further reinforces and strengthens our reputation and role in achieving our vision and we look forward to working with our partners at the ADSC in hosting these prestigious events and to welcoming sporting enthusiasts and athletes from both near and far as they both push the limits of athletic excellence, and in the process, help shape and share the Yas Island story.”
Aligned to the emirate’s leadership vision to develop sport and youth activities, the ADSC promotes an effective, emirate-wide sports calendar that stimulates the desire to participate in quality sports among all Abu Dhabi residents and helps the talented and motivated reach their sporting potential.
In addition to the events under the strategic partnership with Yas Island, the ADSC also hosts and supports the staging of a range of international world-class sporting events, including the annual Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Abu Dhabi Invitational, the Gary Player Invitational, the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Final, the Red Bull Air Race, the hosting of the Volvo Ocean Race round-the-world sailing epic and the 2015 Nomura Cup.
