Al Hudayriat Island’s inaugural race draws more than 400 runners

The Abu Dhabi Sports Council’s (ADSC) Community races city’s newest beachfront city at the Al Hudayriat Island drew more than 400 runners in all age groups and levels on Friday.

British runners Phil Yates and Ana Hicks were successful in the main 10-kilometre races for men and women, clocking 38 minutes 57 seconds and 48.12, respectively.

Rafael Barak of Canada took the 5km race for age group 8-10 years, Jane Stridom of South African emerged victorious in 11-13 category and Pauline Barak in the 14-16. Canadian Trace Park won the 8-10, Briton Sebastian Mekorf 11-13, Marwan Ferreira 14-16.

Roman Kateline Dobry won the open division, Carmen Barac took the Masters and Italian Gina Ponsini was the winner of the Veterans race.  Alberto Vilamor and Ricky Mushtaq Ikram bagged the Vets special categories.

Osama Saeed, winner of the 5km open race, said it was an exciting new experience to run at the city’s newest recreation facility in the picturesque Al Hudayriat Island.

“This exciting new island is open for all I am very happy to participate in this race,” he said.

Yates, winner of the 10km race added: “It’s a wonderful facility and I’m looking forward to take part in more races when it’s staged here. This facility is in a safe environment and far from the hustle and bustle of the city life.”

Khalifa Al Qahtani, director of community services and welfare at the Department of Urban Planning, hailed the success of their first community project at the island.

“I want to thank everyone who contributed to the success of this great community event,” he said.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance and the unstinted support of our Rulers to enhance the quality of life for both to the indigenous and expatriate community.”
