Sri Lanka made a fantastic start, quickly dismantling Pakistan’s top-order with two early wickets, seeing openers Ahmed Shehzad and Fakhar Zaman both depart within the first six overs of the innings. Sri Lanka’s Perera stood out, taking the wickets of Pakistan’s Captain Sarfraz Ahmed and Shoaib Malik to pile the pressure on and leave the hosts 71/5. Pakistan never fully recovered, and Imad Wasim quickly followed his captain, out on review for 10, leaving Pakistan 101/6.
A series equalling victory seemed to beckon for Sri Lanka when the floodlights came on for the evening session at the magnificent Zayed Cricket Stadium with Pakistan persevering at 176/6. However Babar showed great resistance reaching his century, only being dismissed in the final over for 101 and putting on a strong partnership with Shadab, who himself scored 52 not out. Pakistan’s innings finished on 219/9.
