Jasper Carpaij and Roisin Thomas shared the honours in the Liwa Community cycling championship conducted by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) in Al Dhafra over the weekend.
Carpaij, a French national, took the 76km men’s race with a time of 1:58:33 from South African Kyle Correia and Britons Steve James and Simon Henley.
Thomas from Ireland prevented a French double by taking the women’s race over the same distance in 2:19:43. Yvonne van Hattum finished second ahead of another Irish rider Lorraine Mullarkey.
Mohammed Al Subaih led a top six finish for the Emirati riders in the men’s 62km race.
He clocked 1:36:29 to cross the finishing line ahead of Omar Al Muhairi, Sari Al Hammadi, Omar Al Sabhan, Abed Hamed and Majid Al Sayegh.
The event drew 173 riders in the two races over the two distances. Saeed Al Muhairi, Director of Technical Affairs, and Khalid Al Qubaisi, Chairman of the Sports Department, both of ADSC, presented the awards to the winners.
“This event is another addition to the growing list of community events organised by the ADSC, and we are glad to witness such overwhelming response from the participants,” said Al Muhairi.
The community event in Abu Dhabi’s Western region was supported by the General Command of Abu Dhabi Police, the Department of Transport, Al Dhafra Municipality, Health Department, Al Ain Water and National Aid.
