Mashur Al Khalediah avenged his defeat last month to Akoya by clinching the Belgian leg of the UAE President’s Cup for Purebred Arabians at the Wellington racecourse on Monday.

Ridden by Frenchman Jean-Bernard Eyquem the five-year-old grey son of Jalnar Al Khalediah strode clear over the 1,600-metre trip to claim the €30,000 Group 3 prize from Maella De Piboul under Flore Malbran and Akoya with Antonio Fresu atop.

Owned by His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Mashur Al Khalediah was coming into the re-match with Akoya after suffering a narrow defeat to the latter in the President of the UAE Cup at San Siro in Italy last month.

HE Mohammed Issa Abu Hashab Al Suwaidi, the UAE Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium, presented the trophies to the winning connections.

“This is the fourth year the President of the UAE Cup is staged at this racecourse and we are delighted at the success and the overwhelming attendance for the race,” said HE Al Suwaidi.

“Congratulations to our brothers in Saudi Arabia for the victory of now famous Al Khalediah progenies.”

Present at the awards ceremony were HE Saad bin Mohammed Al Arifi, the European Union’s Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Faisal Al Rahmani, Saeed Al Muhairi, both of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and Abdul Moneim Ahmed Ali, General Manager of Al Azba Stables.
