Osman Safi and Amina Muhayd emerged winners of the inaugural Shwaiman Championship, an extreme obstacle race, held at Dana Island on Saturday, March 10.
Safi won the MENA event from Osman Al Assoui and Mohammed Al Hassani. Muhayd bagged the women's competition from Ivana Kolarish and Angelica Chitanoi.
Al Assoui claimed the 3.5km event for men from Al Hassani and Mohammed Al Mansouri while Chitanoi took the women's equivalent. Dubai Police A and B teams took the first two places in the team event from CR Frix.
The championship under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), was held in four different categories; the elite covering 7 kilometres, and the intermediate, beginners and team of four, all over 3.5km.
The event organised by the National and Reserve Service of the Armed Forces in cooperation with ADSC drew more than 1,500 participants.
It was sponsored by Advanced Military Centre, Take-Off, Amroq, Maximus Aviation, the Supreme Council of Motherhood and Childhood, and Aldar Properties.
Major General Sheikh Ahmed bin Tahnoon bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the National Service and Reserve Authority, said he was overwhelmed by the participation and success of the event.
"It's another exciting competition under the banner of 'healthy lifestyle' promoted by the government to encourage people to be involved in physical activities at all levels," he said.
HE Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of ADSC, said the competition will become an annual fixture of their calendar of events.
"Going by the response and enthusiasm, this event is only going to get better every passing year," he said.
"The participants in this competition demonstrated courage and potential to compete in an extreme sport. Through this competition we also saw a majority of the athletes at a good level, meaning they have been engaged in physical activities or training for such events. We are glad this competition was a success and congratulate all the winners."
