Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) announced that Abu Dhabi will play host to the Egyptian football super cup match for the third time running. The match will be on 12 January 2018 at Hazza bin Zayed stadium in Al Ain City.
This time, the super cup match will be between domestic double champions Al Ahly and the Cup’s runners-up: Al Masry.
Details of this event came in a news conference held in the Egyptian capital on Sunday, 24 December 2017. The conference came in the presence of Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and Hani Abu Reida, Chairman of the Egyptian Sports Association, Mohamed Bin Hazzam Al Dhaheri, General Secretary of UAE Football Association, and Mahmoud Al Khateeb, Board Chairman of Al Ahly Sports Club.
Abu Dhabi’s vision to host popular sports event fits within the efforts made by Abu Dhabi Sports Council to attract global sports events, and keeping with the directives of H.H. Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
The press conference was opened by Mohamed Bin Hazzam Al Dhaheri, General Secretary of UAE Football Association who welcomed the attendees, and congratulated the leaders and people of Egypt on the qualifying of the Egyptian national football team for the finals of the World Cup 2018.
For his part, Hani Abu Reida, Chairman of the Egyptian Sports Association lauded the huge capabilities and abilities of the UAE to host mega international sport events.
“We are proud and delighted to announce hosting the Egyptian football super cup in the UAE for the third time,” Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council said.
Al Awani praised the brotherly relations between UAE and Egypt. He also announced that the fourth edition of Zayed’s charity marathon will be held in El Oqsour, Egypt on 19 January 2018.
Awani also thanked the Egyptian Football Association for allowing them this opportunity to host the Egyptian super cup match in Abu Dhabi for the third time.
For their parts, Mahmoud Al Khateeb, Board Chairman of Al Ahly Sports Club, and Mohammed Kamil, Chairman of Presentation Sports Company, Hussam Al Badry, Head coach of Al Ahly, and Hussam Hassan, Head coach of Al Masry thanked the UAE and ADSC for hosting Egypt’s super cup match, and said the match will come out in a very good way.
The Portsaid-based club, Al Masry, will take place in their first ever Super Cup despite losing the 2017 Egypt Cup final to Al Ahly, as the Reds have managed to win the Egyptian Premier League as well.
Al Ahly are the record holders of the tournament with nine titles.
